Ernst-Bresslau Guest Professorship

Award of the Ernst-Bresslau Guest Professorship for the academic year 2017/2018 to Prof. Dr. Konrad Dettner

This year, for the second time, the Institute for Zoology of the University of Cologne awards the Ernst-Bresslau Guest Professorship. The award is presented to Konrad Dettner of the University of Bayreuth, a proven expert in the field of Ecology.

The Ernst-Bresslau Guest Professorship was established in 2016, and is awarded outstanding scientist in the field of Zoology. It is awarded in remembrance of the founder of our Institute, Prof. Dr. Ernst Bresslau. In 1933, just 8 years after being appointed director of the Zoological Institute at the University of Cologne, Ernst Bresslau was sent into premature and involuntary "retirement" by the ruling National Socialist Government, a fate shared by many colleagues at the University of Cologne. The guest professorship is intended to honor the medical doctor and developmental biologist, and to remind us of the injustice to many university teachers during the time of National Socialism in Germany.
